Acting - Detective Kennedy, attached to the detective force in Christchurch, lias been promoted to detective rank. r -Mrs. Jessie Shove, who arrived in New Zealand with her parents in 1855, died at Auckland last week, aged 69. -Mr. J. G. W. Aitken, M.P. for AVellington Easl, has definitely decided noil to become a candidate at the general elections at the end ol the year. Mr. A. B. Atkinson, the well-known lawyer . and supporter of the No-License movement, will contest the sent in the Opposition interest.

Kiillm, who died at Makmewa, Westlaud, recently at the ago of 102 years, was bora in province of l'oscn, Germany, and was a typical specimen of the German race—linil, heart} - , and generous to a degree, and iu his hundred odd years had passed through many stirring times. Ho arrived in lnvercargill 34, years ago, at a time when several othcr'Gcrman families decided to try their fortunes in Near Zealand. When they arrived, they purchased .sections at Georgetown, and afterwards moved to Makarewa hush, where Mr. Knlhn has since resided, and ' during the last year or two was a familiar figure in his garden. Within the last twelve months he contracted influenza, and used to jokingly remark that old age wouldn't kill liin'i—it would be this New Zealand disease, influenza, that would end him. .In this surmise tie was right, for it was through an attack of this dread disease that he succumbed.
The deceased, according to the Grey Argus, was blessed with splendid eyesight ami hearing, and a constitution of: iron.
