Deceased was one of the daughters of the late Mr. it. llmidle, one of the pioneers of the colony, who came to New Plymouth ill its earliest days, where he earned ou the business of contractor and bridge-builder, his "oil time being spent on his farm at Ml block. A very old identity ol this district); passed away yesterday at the Old People's Home. This was Mr. Harry Mayne, agcil 82, well-known in the Inglewooa district. He was a ntltive of Yorkshire, and after 44 years' life ill New Zealaat, ■was admitted to the Home at the end of March last. lie was quite a character, in himself and very popular in the institution, probably An account of his active service with the Taranaki militia, *nd his love for recitation. Ife used to quote Shakespeare readily, and this, interspersed with his goldficlds' and soldiering stories, made him a most interesting companion to his compeers at the Home. He will be buried 011 Monday, afternoon. ■ ,
A private wire yesterday from l)unedin conveyed intelligence of a very serious accident to Mr. Dudley llnod, second son of Captain Hood, harbormaster at New Plymouth. Ml". Hood only left, New Plymouth recently after securing his "ticket" as second engineer to take his first berth as ,111 engineer ou the Union Company's Kaitangata. Yesterday, while engaged on board th-' vessel at I'ovt Chalmers, lie met with an accident which resulted in fracture of the base of the skull.
