ASHBURTON WINTER SHOW.

The fifth Ashburton combined winter show under the auspices of the Agricultural and Pastoral Association and Poultry Society was held yesterday inu to-day and has proved a most successful exhibition from all points of viewij The entries totalled 1003, as against 1041 last year, and the exhibits were all of a high order of merit. The show wis formally opened on Friday afternoon by the Minister for Lands, who also visited it on the same evening. The feature . r the show was the magnificent exhibit of the Agricultural Department, covering a floor space of 50 square feet, and unuer the direction of Mr. W. T. Kirk, Government Biologist; with Jfessrs J. C. Blackmore and \V, A. Boucher, Government Pomologists; Mr. W. Jacques, canning expert, and Mr. I. Hopkins, bee expert, in attendance. A fine show of South Island fruits was made, apples (150 ,aricties) predominating. In the live stock section, draught coles and fillies were of good all-roimd quality. Fat cattle were only moderate, but fat sheep were of unusual merit, and the sheep dog classes were very strong. The butter, produce, etc., classes were well displayed, but grain and seeds, owing to the late drought, were weak. Potatoes were particularly good, and vegetables generally of a first-clans nature. The poultry section of the show was a very strong one, and in nearly all classes there was keen competition. The South Island Poultry Association chanipio iships were awarded as follows:—Pa-t----ndge wyandottes, 11. Roberts; drake or duck, other than Indian runners 7 Mowatt, who exhibited a Pekin. '
