CONCILIATION BOARD. Wellington, Last Night. The Conciliation Board will sit ;-t Palmerston next Monday nnd at Napier next Wednesday in connection with Jmengineers' dispute. IMMIGRANTS. Wellington, Friday. There are 187 Government-assisted passengers on the Corinthic, due here from London on Monday night next. These include 23 farmers, mostly with capital. One has £2OOO and an income of £2OO a year, another iloOO, and several have about £IOOO each. There are 24 domestic servants, nearly all of whom are coming to friends or to fill situations. The steamer is also bringing about a dozen farm laborers. | CONCILIATION BOARD IGNORED. Wellington, Friday. At the hearing of the engineers' dispute before the Conciliation Board, the employers stated that they desired U go direct to the Arbitration Court, lue Union representatives pointed out tnat the Board had power to compel lplovers by subpoena to give evidence. The chairman said this would be done it necessary. The Union opened its cas», but the taking of evidence was deferred.
MOTOR CAR DESTROYED. Wellington, Fridny. Hr. John Duthie l°st his new 14-10 h.p. Argyll! motor car by fire at Taitn. The ehaiill'eur was refilling the petrol tank' by the light of one of the motor lamps when the petrol caught fire and the ear was speedily ablaze. The chauffeur attempted to extinguish the flames by means of a hose, and, getting W) near, was overcome by the fume's of the petrol, lie had a narrow escape from being burned to death.
POLITICAL. Wellington, Friday. Mr. J. P. Luke, who contests the election for the new Wellington suburbs seat at the general election, has opened his campaign. He declared himself a staunch supporter of the Government, He received a vote of confidence. LAND FOR SETTLEMENT. Feilding, Friday. Mr. Ernest Short has received word that Cabinet fcas decided not to purchase his ParOrangi estate, near Feilding. AUCKLAND TOWN HALL. Auckland, Friday. The Auckland City Council has decided to ask the ratepayers to sanction an additional £30,000, making a total if £90,000 for the proposed new town 'ah. ROTTEN BANANAS. Auckland, Friday. Mr. C. C. Kettle, S.M., gave his' reserved decision to-day in the case of Arthur Tooman and Co. v. Reilly, Scott and Gill, of Dunedin, claiming '.£77 7s lOd.
