Mr. Major, M.P., introduced '.Mr. -Marx to Ihe Minister for .Marine on the question uf the New Plymouth Harbor Rill. Mr. Marx sol out that the' settlers uf South Taranaki lad little to gain from improvements in tin; New Plymouth harbor, and were not disposed to perniiit their land to be pledged for a new loan of .CHIHUHHI. They took no exception to New Plymouth borrowing ami making the luirlior. but, they would not consent to loot i!ii' bill fur (he interest payable. Thev wore well served by Patea', the nearest outlet for their produce. Opuuake alsui had equitable claims to be made a harbor district. Mr. Marx brought the mutter under the Minis-' it's notice that at meetings throughout the district (be settlers were pracloaliy unanimous in then- determination not to be included in the proposed rating ar. *, and that thfee-lourlhs of the exports :m.. imports from S"ou1li Taranaki were dei.n with by the ports of Patea ami W'ait,i!rv ...., ~, , -tssioti J he Minister replied that so far as w could judge from the statements of Mr. Major and .Mr. Marx it. was a question, to be dealt with on the same lines as provided in the Uisbornc Harbor Jiill, by which those excluded from liability hall to pay a percentage upon the goods co nmg or going vin the port.
