OUR EDUCATION SYSTEM.

Per Press Association. Dunedin, Last Night A special meeting of the University Council was held to-day to consider the motion by the Rev. W. Hewitson in favor of amending the constitution with •i view to relating the primary and secondary department of the educational system and also the general community more closely with the University. After discussion, a motion was carried to the effect that it is desirable that the constitution of the Council be amended so as to include not only representatives of the Government, Professorial Board, and graduates, but also representatives of the educational buildings of Otago ami Southland and the High School Board of Waitaki, Otago, and Southland, one representative for each of the live boards named, The following resolution was carried: "That: the Council deems it desirable that Government should recognise the high standard of qualification that holders of diplomas of the Otago Mining School have to reach before obtaining diplomas, and amend the .Mining Act: and Coal-mining Act no as to enable such persons to obtain mine managers' certificates on production of certificates from authorised managers that they have been .employed in underground workings of a mine for a period of three yeih-s."
