Ihe Chief Health Officer is gratified at the great improvement i-\ the sanitary conditions and mode of life he observed among the Maoris in tlie Rotorua district. On his return to Auckland t«-day lie stated that the Maoris in the district were achieving excellent results in this direction, and that several of the chiefs were taking a very great interest in the sanitation of the pahs. In many instances old-time whares were being replaced by houses built in accordance with modern health requirements, and there was a general disposition, on the part of the -Maoris to co- | operate with the Health Department | in bringing about an improved state of I affairs. Dr. Mason was met with a reyucst for more medical aid in the outlying districts, but pointed out to the Maoris that they had misconstrued fome of the provisions of an agreement I which they alleged had been entered | into by a previous Government. He promised, however, to lay their requests before the Minister for Health. Auckland, Last Night. AVith reference to the appeal made by Messrs R. J. Entrican, of Auckland, and E. C. Frost, of Tuakau, for assistance for the Maoris in distress in the AValkato, the former gentleman states that there had been a good response from charitably-disposed people. Over sixsacks of good clothing have been received and duly forwarded. The clothina was distributed amongst the Maori* from Huntly down to the AVaikato Heads, where the distress was the most severe. Amongst those who sent clothes was Lady Stout. ' ... ~
