NATIONAL DAIRY ASSOCIATION.

ANNUAL MEETING. THE TKADINU OP CHEESE. Per Frees Association. Dunedin, Last Night. The annual meeting of the National Dairy Association (South Jslaml) was held to-day. Mr. lliiron ((lore) moved that no second grade marks be placed on cheese i for export, Instances were quoted of , eases where cheese "railed as second . grade hail realised a higher |iriee than lirst grade in the same shipment. Mr. Singleton explained that the above fact was due to the condition of j the cheese market at Home. Owing to the falling-oil' in Britain's imports of I cheese from North America there was a demand for meaty bodies of cheese. The matter would he carefully gone into when Mr. Cuddie returned from England. At the request of the meeting Mr. Singleton spoke on the state of cheese at. the time of shipment. He said North Jsland factories were very careful, but for the last six or seven years the South cheese did not present such a satisfactory appearance. There was tin. much handling to enable cheese to go awav at. its 'best. Mr. Scott, in endorsing Mr. Singleton's remarks, said the method of hand- : ling transhipments at Wellington were quite obsolete, but through the efforts . of the shipping companies he hoped to • get the Harbor Board to effect improvement. On occasions cheese which was broken down was given preference, whereas under normal conditions it . would have been second quality. He . strongly advised adherence to the pret sent system. After Mr. Singleton's explanation the i motion was withdrawn. It was decided to ask the (iovern- ,| incut to inquire into the questional temperature of cluunhers carrying cheese in ocean steamers, and to pro- ' vide a, thermograph to inspect, the 1 cheese before the vessel leaves New ' Zealand, and read and recorded by the ' dairy expert at Home. '- Mr. Singleton said the question was unavailing. 1 Mr. James Milne was re-elected presi- ] dent.
