At the Magistrate's Court; a local resident obtained judgment for .CIS damages against Overton, licensee of the Princess Hotel, Terrace End, for assault. FARMERS' FIRE INSURANCE. Dunedin, Last Night. The annual meeting of the Otago Farmers' Union Fire Insurance Association was held to-day. The chairman (Mr. O'ruy) stated the amount now insured was £110,301 ,an increase of £10,500 over that of hist year. THE .lONIC FIRE. Wellington, Tuesday. In giving evidence before the commission appointed to inquire into the fire which recently occurred on the lonic, Captain Muni'o, wharfinger, said tho features of the Turakina and lonic fires were identical. He would not say the iires were attributable to spontaneous combustion. He thought the lonic fire was caused by a bale or bales of flax coming in contact with fire, but how he did not know. He added that the grcatI est difficulty was experienced in keeping people who were smoking away from •the tow and flax which were being loaded. He had never seen matches in a ship's hold. It was possible, of course, that they might gettfherc. I SEAMEN'S BRAWL. ! Wellington, Tuesday. Two more seamen have been arrested to connection with the stabbing affray On the uteamcr Jessie Burns. They have been remanded till Thursday. 'EXPORT OF PRECIOUS ME'RALS. ' Wellington, Tuesday. The amount of gold exported from Kew Zealand for the past fivo months was 7026 ounces more than during the ! -corresponding period of last year, the (totals being as follows:—This year 207,300 ounces, valued at £Bl7,3ls;'last year 190,772 ounces, valued at £800,41)0. JJuring last month the Dominion exported 45,017 ounces of gold of the value of £179,487, as compared with .55,085 ounces, valued at £224,463 in May last year. Tho exports of silver last month was 104,035 ounces, valued at • £10,070, a.s compared with 205,450 ounces, valued at £27,000, in May, 1007. A NEW DEPARTURE. Wellington, Last Night. It has been decided by the Hospital Trustees, on the recommendation of the House Committee, that tenders lie called !for the building of a baker's oven at the hospital in order that the bn.id consumed by the patients and stair n»v bo made on the premises. Figuv:. in'ioed before the trusteos at to-day's Hireling were considered to fully justify the action. It was shown that the usual number of patients in the hospital wnsfrom 280 to 300, and the staff numbered from 100 to 120, the consumption of bread being about 300 loaves per day.
