It is generally understood, that the former predominates so conspicu-oiii-l.v as to make the hitter less than one per cent, in the sunt of lmiuuii actions. And yet almost any man wtfi tell you ilia I. the spirit of true jihilr aiithropy is the right spirit which ciicli man should have, and nearly every idealist dreams of a time when it shall lie the ruling motive of the world. It is coming to lie seen that, rightfully interpreted, those two motives, scli-wcll'are and philanthropy, are not antagonistic lint arc in essence one and the same. That is, the highest form of self-interest—the welfare of the true selfhood—is served only when a man's motives anil efforts are in line with the best interests of the human race, I'n-le-s a man is in some degree working lor the general good he is not working for his own good, hut against his own good. The business man who pursiws :1 poliev contrary to the public good inav "liin wealth, but he loses satisfaction in that wealth, and that -alishiclion was the real object of his effort, so he u thwarted in his attempt to »ain good for self alone, through ignorance of the fact that his own good cannot be separated from that of others.
