A NEW PLYMOUTH CLUB.

In response to tlie advertisement call- ' ig a public meeting of men to consider lie question of forming unother dub in ,Y\v Plymouth, open particularly to the oting nun of the town, there was an ttendance of over oO gentlemen of all hades of opinion and calling, including wo or three clergymen, at the Town lull last night. His Worship the Mayor ircsided, and introduced the subject. He aid that such a club as was now promised should have been formed years igo, but better late than never. It was mo of the most desirable objects he ;new of, to have some place where ,'oung men could meet in comfort to ipend their evenings in amusements and uirroundmgs to their respective or colective tastes. Such a club w'Ouhl also tppeal to 110 inconsidorable extent, to voting men from sill-rounding country dis. iricts, when in town, to meet their friends. The promoters bad secured an option liver the very suitable rooms recently vacated by tiie Education Board; and previously used by tile Taranaki ('lnb. The. ' Hoard had some twelve months of their lease to run, and Sir. K. (.It-urge had given an option to the promoters to secure the premises for any term up to seven years from the expiry of the Hoard's twin at an annual rental of JMO per annum. The club should be it great success, and be had pleasure in moving—:"l'hnt this meeting pledges itself to support the formation of a men's club in New l'lymoiith.' 1 Mr. W. (!. Malono seconded, and urged that the c'ub be not conlined to young men, and that only a minimum age be fixed. Mr. Mcljood outlined the scheme the promoters had in mind —a cosmopolitan club to which the main qualification for membership should bo good behaviour, He dealt with the financial aspect, showing that, with 150 members at ;Cl pel' annum, the project could be safely conducted. Mr. Enroth, in a speech ill appreciation of the movoiuent, enlarged on the social and educational influence that could be exerted by a men's club con-
lucted on broad lines. The motion was carried unanimously uuidst applause. Mr. A. Humphries moved tluit a committee of nine lie set lip to carry out all preliminary arrangements and report to a future meeting. Mr. Lovegrove seconded, and the motion was carried. The following committee was set tipMessrs. Ci. 'l'isdi, K. George, J. F. SLrang, P Hopkins, Ken. Webster, R. Colson. W. Roberts. W. Nichols, J. Mcl,eod, and A. Humphries (secretary and treasurer). Glided, the Rev. Mr. Evans and Mr. living speaking jn support, and the motion was carried. On the motion of Mr. W. P. Webster, sen., seconded by Mr Enroth, the annual subscription was fixed at £l. Mr. Iladdrell moved and Mr. G. Grifliths seconded, that the. minimum age for membership be 18. Ail amendment moved by Mr. liishop, seconded by ill'.. f.ovegrOvd}. that the minimum age bo 10, was lost On a division. A further amendment, moved by Rev. Evans, and seconded hy Mr. 11. Stoekor, that the question be left to the committed to fully consider was carried unanimously, the motion being withdrawn. The Mayor was elected chairman It was resolved that the institutioi be named "The New Plymouth Club." An account is to be opened with tin National Hank, the chairman and sec-re tary to operate on it. li. was decided that six form : quorum. The next meeting will bo held oi Tuesday evening next in the Mayor' room, where rules will be drawn up to Submission to a general meeting, am other business regarding the securing o billiard tables, furnishing, etc., full; considered, for the purposes of the re port.
