THE PHOm.E.M 80EYE1X Per Press Associat'ofl Wellington, East Sight. The problem of how to live on half-a-crown a week is being solved by a young man, the adopted son of an old lady. This young man made a most favorable impression 011 the trustees of the Benevolent Institution this afternoon. "What have y'On coming in?'' asked the chairman (l!cv. W. A. Evans) of the applicant. "Two pounds a month; that's another's pension," was the reply. ''What do von J)iiy for renU" was the next question. "Seven and sixpence, sir," replied the applicant; "we live 011 lialf-a-cvown a week."
The trustees found on close investigation that tile young man's story was accurate ill every particular, and that lit: was living with his mother in a house that Avas damp, dark and wretched that ought to be condemned. As a consequence of these conditions of living, it was stated at tlie Jioard meeting that the applicant was a victim to rheumatics, for which lie was being treated at the hospital as an out-patient. The Board decided to continue rations and to make ii rent allowance in order that the young mail and his mother might move to healthier quarters. °
