The English footballers wore driven down to Papawai yesterday, where they weiv the guests of the natives and were 1 entertained in the runanga house to afternoon It a. They were welcomed by a Maori attired in native fashion, accompanied by two girls ill white, who guve a dance of welcome. A short programme of dances and nui-sic followed, in which the visitors, to whom the sight wan quite novel., took a keen interest. Much amusement was aiiorded by th.i inveigling of a youthful and good-look-ing member of the team on the stage during a haka, where he was requested to t-\i with a Maori cloak thing round him while the dance proceeded. At theend a young girl advanced, knelt down by hi.s side, encircled his neck witli her arm. and at the lim>h gave him a hearty kiss. 11 is comrades vociferously encored this act by shouting in unison,
"He wants.more." An address of welcome was presented, which to be framed and given to the team.
Mr. Harnett, manager of the team. wn> pa-ented by Tamaluiru Mahupaka Kingi with a handsome mat and kiltf (_)ne or two other members were alsn jii'esented with articles of native attire and the Englishmen "went away gieatlv pleased and interested by their first glimpse of Maori life. WES'i'EUN DIVISION. RAIIOTU v. OKATO. From Our Own Correspondent" 1 . The senior football match. liahotu v. Okato, was played at- Raliotu on Saturday, and proved very interesting. There was a very good attendance. The | weather was unsuitable for good football, a heavy wind blowing right down the field, whilst the. rain that fell was just suilicient to make the ball greasy; nevertheless, at times the play was well up to the average. 11l the first spell liahotu played with the wind behind them, and at onee pressed Oka to, the ball being l'oreed twice in quick succession. liahotu. however, wa* not to lie'denied, and (lie forwards, headed by Moffat t and liothery, again placed Okato oil the defensive, Ouy relieving with a neat mark. Soon after, Irom a loose scrum Billings obtained the ball and scored for liahotu, 11. Mm'tin adding the extra points. During must of this (spell liahotu continued to press, and were near scoring on one or two occasions, but- the good defence ol the Okato backs saved the position, ami the spell ended—liahotu points, Okato nil. With the wind liehinu them Okato made things merry, and at once pressed liahotu. Sullivan scoring after a line run down the line. Anderson failed at goal. Soon alter, from a scrambling ru-h. McCullum scored, and Anderson added the major point-, liahotu forward-. aided bv Kupi and liayiior. brought the ball back, but Sullivan, who'was playing a brilliant game, tunc and again saved with long kick-. Towards the end of the game, which was finished almost in the dark, Larking and Carey scored for Okato, no goalresulting. The game elided-Okato 14, liahotu 3. For the winners. Carey.
