As a result of the low values of wool, it is stated that there is scarcely a farmer in the Manawatu district who lias drawn nu the bank for advance? oil wool forwarded to Loudon but will have to refund part of hi,-, advances, his return being less than was estimated. An enthusiastic meeting was held in Xcw Plymouth on .Saturday. The chairman: "You've all heard the motion. Those in favor of its adoption, say 'Aye'." Not a murmur. "Those against, say -No.'" Another stolid silence. "The 'ayes' have it." And tliey had it. In view of the decision of the ratepayers' meeting on Friday evening, Councillor Atlkuii liii« given notice to move at next meeting of the Taranaki County Council to rescind the resolution authorising.the payment of .CiliO subsidy to the Eliot, Frankloy, and Carringtou road districts. A boy cycling round I lie Currie-Dcvuii-.street' comer ou Saturday afternoon became Hush-red by the fact that two expresses and a number of footpassengers seemed inclined to contest the crossing, so of the several evils he chose tin- least and eh,\rg"d a pedestrian. Neither of the two was injured.
"Why.'' once asked Mr. Uoyd-C.eorge. "what is th-- i-.f of -ending lo our colonies our best blood and sinew if we are to be left with the dro-s'; And what a piece of presumption to dump the dross upon the colonics, keeping tile good for ourselu'-! Let us lirsf elevate the masses, and leaven up the. lump, so that when Britain's -oils pour across the seas the old Mother and he,- daughter Slates will both have cause for gratitude.'' Discipline is evidently a strong point at the Central School. Alacrity in obedience was displayed on Friday after noon. During a couple of respites in the round of speeches the children were given their liberty, and, as usual with the juveniles, they were soon scattered about the playground, singly and in knots. A shrill blast of Mr." bempscv\ wlii-dle placed (hem all on the alert, and in a remarkable brief space of time the wli.-b- of them relumed t„ (heir former place, in ill.- ranks. Although the Chora i--.ul is pretty ninthly just now, us might be expected, it is' really in better order than for some seasons past. Mr. J, Hewer, the Whangamoinona coach proprietor, informs the Stratford I'o*t ilmt (here are no bad holes to negotiate, anil the journey can l« mfcly made. Very good progress is being made by .Mr. Cameron with his metalling contract, and the tinverninenl men are rcporled t 0 he doing good work. Altogether, from what we can gather, things are better managed on the road this winter.

Owing lo au unfortunate accident during the operations connected with the -hutting "IV of the water at the petroleum bore at Moluroa, a portion of ca-ing became detached in the bore, lieyoiul again delaying operations, the incident is not regarded as in any way serious. On Saiurdav afternoon, Ike lost portion wa.s .secured with the rods, and the work of drawing the pipe- will probably be commenced to-day. It is expected that the ]p ipes will be recoupled in a day or two. and the work of shutting off tile water again resumed. The literary ami debating branch of the recently-formed Roland Catholic Club appears to be thriving. Xo 'ess than live gold and silver medals have already been donated to it. for competition during the ensuing season. The first of the competitions for these prizes will lie held on Tuesday evening, when a gold medal presented by Father Macmanus will be competed for. On this occasion each entrant will be allowed to sjieak for fifteen minutes on any subject he chooses. The judges will be Dean McKcnna, Dr. McCle'land. and Mr. A. H. Johnstone.
Crossing the Atlantic last summer with Mark Twain, a fellow-passenger asked his opinion of the prohibition law. His reply was very, characteristic and very humorous. "I am a friend of temperance, and want it to succeed," he said, "but I don't think prohibition is practicable, l am s orry to learn that the Germans have just 'invented a method of making lirandy out of sawdust. Xow, what chance will prohibition have when a until can take a rip saw and go and get drunk with a fence rail? What is the good of prohibition if a man is aide to make braudv smashes out of the shingles on his roo'f, or if he can get delirium tremens bv drinking the legs oil 1 his kitchen chairs?

The importance of providing rugs for their dairy cow rt is not yet fully recognised by many fanners. Co'ws are turned into cold wet paddocks, where there is little or no shelter, week after week during the winter months. How much this affects the milk supply it is rather dillieult to state delinitelv, but one farmer who lias provided ruins for his herd states (hat it makes a dill'ereuce of about U per cow during the season. Even if it only made a difference of ,t:2 per row it would still be money well spent, as a rug should easily last three or four seasons. Cows that are continually exposed to the cold cannot possibly g iv c . ti lc quantity of milk they otherwise would. il H the food taken under those conditions is practically all used lor hcat-protlueing purposes.' and there remains \i~ry little with which to produce milk. Apart from that, however, it would abundantly pay in (lie improved condition of the cows, which would be very apparent.
