BOROUGH COUNCIL, ELECTION. Per Prces Association. Palmei'Ston N-, Last Night. The election to till the extraordinary vacancy on the Borough Council caused by the resignation of Mr. J. A. Nash previous to 'his contesting the mayoral election, resulted as follows: —H. Palmer 780; K. Mulrooncy 053; W. H. Payne 98; majority 133.
BURGLARY AT AUCKLAND. Auckland, last Night. The premises of J. Scliischka,> merchant, Beach road, were broken into last night, and tobacco to the value of £<so stolen.
COACHING MISHAP, Nelson, Last Night. A mishap occurred to the Blenheim"Nelson coach on the Wakapuaka road, about two miles from town, this afternoon. Through the leaders swerving, the vehicle went over a slight embankment at the side of the road, overturning. The driver (Geo. Newman) was pinned tinder the coach. ■ lie escaped, (however, with severe bruises. There were, three passengers, none, of whom was seriously hurt. One of the horses re. ceived injuries which subsequently necessitated its destruction,

Per Press Association. Wellington, Thursday, Reuter's Telegram Company have declared the usual dividend at the rate of 5 per cent per annum for the half-year ending December 31. LANDS FOR SETTLEMENT Mastcrton, Thursday, It is understood that after the Land Purchase Board had inspected the late Mr Andrews' lea estate notice was served of the Government's intention to purchase the property, but in the meantime the trustees are surveying it into five sections for division amongst tile family. The Hoard also visited the property of (lie late. Mr Meredith, the Westmerc portion of Brancepetli, and some of Mr W. C. Buchanan's land.
