EDUCATION BILL, PASSES SECOND READING. Received 21st, 8.41 p.m. London, May 21. In the House of Commons the Education Bill was read a second time by 270 to 205. The majority included 64 Nationalists. Although Mr. Asquitii was more conciliatory than the other Ministers, Mr. SallDnr was unable to elicit more than the willingness of the Government to consider suggestions compatible with the fundamental principles of the Bill. ' FISCAL DEBATE. Received 21st, 9.27 p.m. London, May 21. In the House of Lords the Duke of Marlborough initiated toe fiscal debate. Lord Cromer emphasised what he deMtibed as the "absurd, intolerable, and Minute classifications 0 f the Australian Uriff." He complained that there was a prospect of only slight changes in cotonuil protective tariffs. H c urg ed the Motherland to leave well alone. Lord Milner declared the question was whether "we intended to be the prineiP*' sellers to the colonies, or to have two more treaties like the Franco-Cana-dian made, and our position on the CanMian market be thus destroyed."
