A USEFUL SOCIETY.
Per Presß Association. Duncdm, Last Night. The annual meeting ol the Society for the Protection of Women and Children was held to-day. The annual report stilted that the number of cases dealt with was 114, as compared with 90 last year, and 107 in the preceding year. The cases include 16 of ill-usage an<t cruel neglect of children; 11 of runaway husbands; 19 of drunken husbands; one ' drunken wife and one drunken mother; some eases of affiliation (settled out of Court), wliilst the remainder were divided amongst ca'ses of unmanageable daughters, petty thefts by girls, complaints re neglect to pay for maintenance of children before the Infant Life ~ Protection Act came into force, and neglect of children to provide for parents. The saddest cases were those of young girls who were mothers under sixteen, for whom no adequate redress could be 'obtained, owing to the limitation of time allowed by the Act under which proceedings could he taken. The following resolution was carried: "That it is highly desirable and necessary that female factory inspectors bo re-appointed, and that a deputation interview the Minister of Labor on the matter."
