FIRES.
XARROW ESCAPE OF THE AUCKLAND POST ORt'TCE. Per Press Association. Auckland, Thursday, A fire which might luive had serious consequences but for the smart work of the brigade, occurred at the Telegraph Office this morning, •As a telephone exchange clerk was coming off duty at 1.47 a.m. he found Jus progress to the stairway leading to Shortlaiid street blocked by thick volumes of Smoke, evidently proceeding Horn the direction of the despatch room.
An alarm was at once given and tiie Central brigade (under Superintendent Jfoolley) were on the scene within tliree (minutes. The iloor leading to the upper storeys was broken in and the flames located in a, lavatory adjoining the despatch room, where they were rapidly gaining a hold. The brigade, however, succeeded in confining the outbreak to two small rooms, but not before they were completely gutted, the roof and walls being burned away.
