PERSONAL.

The lion. J. Carroll i 3 at present confined to bed with a throat affection, which has been troubling him for some days.

At Palmciston North last week, before his Honor, ilr Justice Chapman, Air P. OTJeu, AI.A., L.Uii., headmaster of the Patca school, was admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the Miprenie Court.

The death is aunouiiced of the only son of the late Dr. AlcGvegor, luspec-lor-Ge'ner.,l of Asylum b and Hospitals in New Zealand, in Canada. The deceased was an aid Wellington College boy, and very popular amongst his colleagues. After marriage he and his wife went to Canada, and seemed to have a prosperous career before them.

The Auckland Observer tells the following story in connection with Air. John Strauchon, who has just been ap-:-pointed Commissioner of Lands for the ! Auckland district;— When he was Commissioner at New Plymouth he one? recommended two of his juniors for in creases in salary. The Estimates for the year came out, and tho proposed increases were not shown. Oil posted Air. Strauchon to Wellington by the next morning's train, without a word to the oilieors concerned, and bearded the head of the Department and the Minister about their non-appreciation of the

worth of deserving members of the service. Exactly what happened did not, of course, "ranspirc, but Air. Strauchon's battling for his subordinates had its reward, for the Supplementary Estimates a few weeks later gave them the extra salary they were entitled to. When an officer will stand by his subordinates in this whole-souled way, it is not surprising to hear that the subordinates, in their turn, swear by him, and are encouraged to put forward their Ik>s( work for the public.
