Ju>t as the Harbor .Board was adjourning yesterday, Air. James Thomson asked, "Do wc get our expenses paid lor going round the country 'gassing' about thi«s Bill'i 5 There was considerable badinage, and Air. Thomson was just iß'ginning to think that hi* chances of reimbursement were small, when Air. King pointed out that the Hoard had decided to pay all actual ex-peu-es incurred by the members. "One thing 1 have been much struck with," said a member of the Acclimatisation .Society Jast night, "is the very large proportion of cock pheasants .seou this year. Once 1 put up six birds, and I tliey were all cocks." An elderly sports--1 man on the other side of the room remarked, "I put up four hens in one place." The quizzically regarded him for a trice, aud then the lii'st speaker observed drily, "It must have been very trying to you/ 5 And there wars a general loud suule. Harbor Board members wefc inclined yesterday to wrestle with knotty questions, First they tackled tho laws relating to boundary aud fencing. Having satisfactorily settled this, several of the members set up as timber experts. Air. Hughes pinned his faith to the timber from "down country." Air. King replied that he had a house sixty years old built oi timber from tho northern spurs of Mount- Egmont, and it would la-t out any house built now from •'down-country'' timber. Then the I argument snb>ided.
In the annual report of the Ai-li-matisalioii Society's Council it is noted that anglers licensed bv Iho Slrall«>r:i • Acclimatisation -Society were JUhing in ) the Taranaki Society's waters. There is a oy-law which prohibits th.dumping of refuse in the New Plymouth harbor, but the sand-pump on the djM'dge prove* conclusively that ii is llngr.inlly disregarded. The "Tommy King" rebels at being used to heave up ships' refuse from the harbor bottom, and stoppages are caused when kerosene and other tins are sucked up by the pump. The mutter wars brought under the notice of the Harbor Hoard yesterday by the chairman, and upon his motion it was decided to bring the matter under the notice of the shipping companies.

I In a memorandum oil the report of Mr. N. I), (.oehrane. F.C.S., on minerals in parts of Knnmnt National Park, tlie fiovcrninenl Cieologist, Mr. XicKav. says:—"So far as (hp metallic contents ot ihe reefs (i-ca 11<>ii) or the Mlk-ion-bands within the bounds of the reserve arc concerned, it must bo confessed that they do not indicate Kucces»ful prospecting operations in the future—that is, as far as evidence at the present time leads us to conclude; hut it may he rightly contended that no sufficient testing of the district has yet been made.'' If prospectors are admitted. Mr. McKay believes they may vet make a valuable discovery. Lamer in the memorandum Mr. McKay s aid there seemed 110 doubt whatever that the original volcanic rocks within the ftgmont Park Reserve, as fatthey had been examined, had sustained a kind and degree of alteration such as made them resemble the altered andesitos of the Hauraki goldfields. Mr. Cochrane ako refers to this eorresponde»ce in his report.

Ten per cent. interest on a loan is a hurdle thai people don't usually tackle unless they're forced to. It's like putting a mill-wheel round the nock of the borrower, who sooner or later stumbles and falls under tho burden. The .Hoard ol S<-I»nul (omminsioners looked ask-
an<e yesterday at an application by a tenant for leave to mortgage at ibis high rent, and decided to grant the reijuest only upon condition that the terms were amended in the direction of the reduction of the rate of interest by two per cent, for prompt payment. There wa.-. a narrow escape t'roiu \ serious outbreak of lire at the Coronation Hotel yesterday morning (says tlw
Kltham Argils). A housemaid on enter nig one of the bedrooms found it lull «>i' smoke. She raised an alarm, which was heard bv Mr. T, Keilly, who was in the yard adjoining the hotel, lie rushed upstairs, and at the second atlcmp: succeeded in making his way through the smoke to tho bedding, which wm* smouldering, and throwing it out of the window. It. is supposed someone had been smoking in the room and had let some, sparks tall on the bedding.
A rattling row in Devon Str'-et yesterday morning gave people an idea that tlie motor omnibuses had started running. Hut it was not the case. It. was a runaway hmw. in a milk-carl, and it. came tearing down the main street, all over the road, with the driver lying hack aud hauling all his might on the reins. The backhand had broken at the
top of the hill near the post ollice, and the fall of the shafts startled the horse, and the bolt occurred. Air. Simmons, who was driving, managed to pull the animal to a standstill opposite Alcssrs. Amhury Bros., and he was .soon released from his awkward predicament. It was noticeable that the street was very clear of ulhcr vehicular trallic at the time.
The annual meeting of tit. Aiary's Choir was held bust night. The vicar, ►the Rev. I*\ Li. Evans, presided. The ] balance-sheets of the general and organ . funds were adopted. Air. 11. Al. Bannister was reappointed lion, secretary and treasurer, and Air. W. P. Crawford assistant secretary. Air. Rannister, who has served for fifteen years as librarian, was again nominated, but asked to be relieved, and Mr. T. Woodard was elected in his stead. The following committee was elected for the. ensuing \ear: Misses Deacon and A. Oeorge and Mr. Lewis, with the choirmaster, secretary, assistant secretary, and librarian ex ollicio. Aliss Deacon and Air. Woodard were reappointed custodians respectively of the l,ulie->' and gentlemen's \ot,<\i (jt' thanks were accorded the Rev.

KeeenL hiippeuiiigs iu Wellington vvilh wgard to the operations of a man who bee:!me bankrupt serve to emphasise ihu tact that the people of to-day are just Hp; gullible as in the viinple days «»t old. The make-yourich quack is just as fashionable a physician of Jinam-e to-day as in the limes of Cagiiosiro. and even supposedly level-headed business men ;»ml exceptionally keen women in Wellington walked into a get-rich trap. It i> a remarkable thing that people who will not Iru-d an old friend with one pound will trust a stranger with hundreds of pounds. Apropos, it is stated that a Wellington linn of bookmakers lost CoOO in connection with the man who bolted. It was represented to the tirm that a house, worth about €2001). was for sale. The vendor showed them the liouhc, but excused ihimsclf from showing them over it. The price, ho said, was ,Cl(H)U—£soo down and the balance on mortgage. The money was deposited, and interest paid on the mortgage -before the fraud was discovered, 'then it was 100 late to recover. A sure bait is the make you-rich quick proposition!—Feilding .Star.
••Dominion'' write*:—*it is apparent that we are to have repealed the tactics which prevailed hint year, and which led up to a strong demand for the re-mi>-oi.n of tiic duties on wheat and Hour. Thai demand wa> strong enough in lorn? ihe hand ol the (.iovernment to the extent of passing a measure to aiioli>li the duties under certain conditions. The legislation is practically worthier, but it will never do to bring about another demand on the part of the public for lotvcrnment interference. Prices in New Zealand have risen be* cau*e there ha* been an advance in Sydney, and importers will for the time being have some dilliculty in obtaining supplies from that source. Millers arc quick to make advances, but do not exhibit the same, eagerness to reduce price:-, even when conditions fully warrant such action. We do not believe thai there is any shortage in New Zealand. At any rate, if there its, that is all the more reason why we should be free to obtain supplies from other sources. The suggestion put forth by one miller, that the agitation to withdraw the duties ou wheat and flour caused farmers to gow 18,500 acres less, may be dismissed as a 'biassed statement.' The weather conditions had more to do with the matter than tHe public demand for the. abolition of the duties.'-
