CONFERENCE AT WASHINGTON. New York, May 14. President Roosevelt opened the Washington Conference of State Governors and experts on the conservation 01 national resources. Cabinet Ministers, members of Congress and Justices of the Federal Supreme Court were aiso present. J'resident Roosevelt emphasised tae rapid exhaustion of natural resources. The limit of unsettled land was in sight. Half the timber had gone. The can o; the iron and coal supplies was in sight. .Mineral oil and gas had gone. The natural waterways were neglected. The soil was impoverished by injudicious use. Both the nation and the States ought to enforce a policy of conservation, which would preserve the soil, the forest, and the water power as the heritage of future generations. Tliey ought to recognise it as a patriotic duty to insure the safety and continuance of the nation by raising its citizens to tin highest pitch of excellence in private, State, and National life.
