A CRUEL MOTHER.
Per Press Association. I'eildiitg, Last N'igiH. A shocking case of cruelty to a child by its mother was before Mr. A. D. Thomson, S.M., to-day. A girl lifteeu years old, gave evidence, which was corroborated, that her ordinary working, clothes were only a filthy nightdress and a tattered pinafore. The doctor who examined the girl stated that- she was literally covered with bruises all over her body, inllicted by the mother. 'The girl had been frequently left without meals. Mrs. i'oggarty, mother of the girl, was living with Pearson, her husband being in Auckland. Tlie Magistrate said the case was a most paint'u and shoe-king one. It was almost incredible that a mother could have so neglected and abused her child, and but for the fact that accused had small children he would have sent her to gaol. A line of £lO, with £2 7s costs, was inllicted.
