His coat and lmt were found on the wharf, A NARROW ESCAPE, Wairoa, Friday. Mr. F. Jones, formerly of Gisborac, liaronviy escaped drowning ;it Stewart's crossing on Wednesday. The river was ill Hood. Mr. Jones' liorse was drowned and tile rider wati washed down the rived. He had an overcoat on. It wag a miraculous escape. INQUEST. '1 lu> evidence failed to prove what ear the deceased was a passenger on when he met with the accilent which resulted fatally. A woman passenger said deceased had lulled the bell indicating that he wished to alight. The ear slowed down, but not to ntop. It then went faster, and Mr. l'etrie jumped out when the car w«s going live or six miles an hour. The deceased fell, and tlio motorman. stopped the car, ran to where Mr. l'etrie lay, and took the names of nome ol the paiwng«rß. The City Solicitor said he had interviewed all the tramway men employed on. t.'mt section at about the time of the accident, and none admitted knowledge of the accident. No accident had been reported. The jury decided that deceased met hi* death accidentally by slipping from a moving car on the night of Oth April.
