TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa"). Ideal weather, a large attendance of -porting folk, interesting racing, ami brisk speculation, rewarded the AvDndale -Jockey Clnb on Saturday hist. I'aritntu, Freemount, Kapakapa. and English were withdrawn from the Maiden Hurdle Race, leaving a field of eight runners. Te Baliui, the favorite, was prominent five furlongs from I home, but nothing had a chance wit'# Landlock, who . practically led from start to finish, and easily beat Montigo in the run home. Till Cakobau and Frederick were tinonly defections from the Flying. Lttcio carrying most coin. Mighty Atom was the first to begin, and "cake-walked" the event. It t*kcs a fair horse to heat a smart pony over four furlongs; tile ponies begin so quickly. Stylisii and Kirsty filled the places. linprimns was again the public, pick for Hie Pony Handicap, and the daughter of Phoebus Apollo justified her staunch support by beating Octoroon after a sharp tussle. Ngakapa was close tip third. Tyo.-hbiilife and Foremost were scratched f"i" the Autumn Handicap, I lie lopweight, Leonator, carrying most coin. Miss Winnie made the pace to tin' distance. where T.eonatoi' came willi a strong run. and won by a couple of lengths. Certainty was third. Tui C;i!,obau fourth, and Lady liohina last. On (he strength of his forward running on the first day, Rarata was picked upon as a likely scorer in the Nursery Handicap, but after leading to I lie distance Kimluck caught and beat him home bv a couple of lengths. Eight horses faced tile starter in the Handicap Steeplechase, Tui being best, hacked on the machine. When the field had settled down, Matakokiri led food Faith and Cinque. The latter took command at the third obstacle, but at the brush fence Kapakapa was in tli > van, Matakokiri running off. Kapakapa and Cinque raced along the back three lengths ahead of Pierre, but at the head of the straight Kapakapa had shaken his opponent off, and Pierre was coming fast. The latter challenged again and again in the run to the judge's box, but Kapakapa finished gamely, and ran in a winner by a little over a length. Tui was three lengths away third, and Cinque fourth.
Stylish was "hot stnff'for the Mount Roskill Handicap, and gave her backers a good run for their money, but Azoli' (Mensehikoff —Queen Cole) caught her a hundred yards from the winning post, and won comfortably by three-quarters of a length. Waiotahi was third, and Eseamillo next.
Marangai, Tni Cakoban. and Epsom Lass dropped out of the Waitakerei Bandicap, and of the ten runners I inpublic would have nothing but Uranium. ! llhe latter got away smartly and led to the straight, where Lnchbuhie sailed out and appeared to lie a certain winner, but Foremost came with a great run on the 'outside, and won by half a length. Tauriki was a length behind Lochbubie, and Dogger Bank and Uranium followed. (.iolden Eagle was never prominent, and linished well back. In referring to the Mew Zealand colt Maranui, "Milroy," of the Sydney Mail, says:—'"That the son of Malatua can gallop a mile as ia-t as Togo, or any other horse in the race, most, people familiar who watch the training at lUndwiek will readily admit, but his trouble is the standing start. Uiven a swinging go up to the post, Maramii can certainly run the Doncaster distance fast enough to win H) times otu of 20, but jumping off from a stand utterly disconcerts him. He has proved this to us over and over again. Even at Moorefleld a few '•potstieks" lairly
