THE NEW HEBRIDES.
Melbourne, May 0. fn the Federal House of Representatives, Mr. A. Deakin was again questioned with respect to the New Hebrides. He stated that he had sent tho following message to the Colonial Of-flce:~-''Ministers arc privately informed that the French member for the Joint Council for the New Hebrides has been chosen and is now in the group studying local conditions. Obviously this gives him-a great advanage unless the British representative is appointed at once." On March 16 he had received a reply that the appointment of a British Judge would be made as soon as possible. Eeceived 7 th, 12.25 a.m. London, May 6In the House of Commons, Lieut-Col-onel Secley, in reply to a question, said that owing to the exceptional nature of the qualification desirable, there was some difficulty in finding a suitable candidate for the post of British member on the joint court of the New Heb-rides-but it was hoped to make an early selection. He added that the Court cannot commence its functions until the new buildings arc completed in the autumn.
