Mr. Lloyd-George, in the course of a recent .-pcceh, said:-Amidst all the bitterness of party conflict there whs in this land a latent personal tolerance which exalted, purified, and ilignilied political life. lie had been in the House of Commons for very nearly nineteen yearsisHind had seen Parliaments where there was a good deal of personal feeling and acrimony, hut through it all there was a personal good feeling. .Most of them knew Hie Mouse of Commons from the Chamber where, they met t» discuss the business of the nation. That was not the most important place in the HouSe of Commons for members. If they wanted to know the House of Commons they must go to the smoking room. Reporters not being allowed to enter, luckily, they talked there exactly as they felt, without anv fear of constituent* or leading articles. Tbev would probably find "there a small group of men sitting round a table with teetotal beverages on it. A strong Conservative would be sitting next to a rank Radical. Cheek l>v jowl th«v would find a strong Irish' Nationalist with an Orangeman, and next they would have a great capitalist by a Socialist who was supposed to be'-greedy for his wealth and property-all talking together in the most friendly way. The generosity of individuals towards the personalities of the House of Commons bad no distinction of party. That came' of long generations of practice in the art of self-government.
