SHIPMASTER FINED.

On Wednesday, before 11. !■>, Fitzlierbert, S.JI., James Williamson, ut Waitara, shipmaster, was, at the instance ol' Hie Marine Department, charged with having in October last proceeded on u voyage with a hull; without its being provided with such life-saving appliances as are required by the rule made under The Shipping ami Seamen's Act. Mr. Kerr appeared for the Marine Department, and Mr. Quilliaiu for llie defendant. The defendant pleaded guilty, and Air Quilliam urged that as defendant had already been ordered to pay half the co-its of the nautical enquiry, lie thought only a nominal fine should he inflicted. Mr. Kerr explained that the Marine Department had deemed it vital in the interests of the travelling public and seafaring men to take these proceedings. It was intended (o vigorously enforce these regulations, which were expressly made for the safety and welfare of the community. His Worship stated that he recognised the importance of strictly enforcing tile rules, and while in view of the cirI cumstauces of the case he would not inflict a heavy penalty, he would like il to be clearly understood that should a similar ease come before him hj" would inflict a substantial fine. Defendant j would he fined £2 2s and costs £1 Is.
