TARANAKI'S HINTERLAND

MU. JEXNTNG'S VISIT. , SETTLEMENT GOING ON APACE. (Special to News.) Taumaruuui, Last Night. After a month's tour through the northern portion of the electorate, Mr. W. Jennings, Mjl'., reached Taumaruuui la-l night. Since his visit last year a great improvement in Mangaotoki,,Muiroa, Aria, Kaeaca, Manga pa pa, Matiere, Mangaroa, and other way-back settlements was noticed by the member in regard to the clearing of bush and the stocking of sections. Experienced settler-, principally from Woodville, Tarunitki. and other southern places are altering the appearance of the country and adding to the wealth of the Dominion. The increase of settlers ill mo-l places has proved the insiiliicieucy of school accommodation nt Mangipapa. TV Kuiti, and Tatua. At the lattei place a log "bar,, is used as a school, and in consequence of the bad light several children have had to leave through strained eyesight. The extension of the telephone is much appreciated by the settlers, though much more is required >is settlement progresses onward. The roads, especially Hie main arterial roads, have cut up early this year, revving to the increased trallic, which on the Te Kuiti—Mahoenni ami Ongaone-Ma-gnagoa main road bus increased over IIMI per/-cut. during the past two years. ' The earth hunger still continues, many strangers passing the Easter holidays in visiting the King Country in search of land. - There is a tendency towards .speculation, and high prices have, been paid for business sites in Taumarunui and Te Kuiti for twenty-one year leases, llolli these places are growing like mushrooms, and must become important centres as the unutilised country surrounding i* o|iened up for settlement. The Hon. Mr. Hall-Jones and Dr. Kindlay stopped at Taumarunui la.-t night, proceeding over the Main Trunk to Wellington this morning.
