TURF TOPICS
(By "Moturoa")
Wellington and Avondnlc meetings open to-day. Gold Crest registered a good gallop at Trcntham on Monday morning.
Diabolo has been scratched for the Plunket Nursery Handicap, in which Cipsy Belle (Stcpniak—Belle Clair) will represent Mr. J. Monk. Sir too. Clifford is credited with having a particularly smart lilly in I'liiawuy, and the daughter of Clanranalil will have a large following iu her next
few races. The racing that Diabolo had at Auekand has sharpened him up somewhat, tnd he will Ik; given a run in the North sland Challenge Stakes. The seven furong event should suit him well, as ne ilways seems to be galloping over •vcrytliing at the conclusion of live md six furlong races.
The sensational Moata figures among the acceptors for the Railway Handicap, arid will have to be as good as lie is cracked up to be to beat liallarat and Murtyrium, who are galloping very freely just at present.
The horses left in the North Island Challenge Stakes, with weights to be carried, are as follows;—Signor 9.2, Carissiiuu 9.1, lileneiilloch 8.0, Husbandman 7.7, Formative 7.4, anl Diabolo U. 13.
The probable starters and riders in the Thompson Handicap are as follows: I— Cold Crest 9.G (W. Young), Marguerite 9.0 (R. Hatch), Taugiiuoa'na 8.4 (A. Olliver), Dawn 7.13 (I<\ 0. Jones). San Julie 7.7 (K. Cress), .Signoi- 7.3 (T. Jelfries), Stratagem 7.3 (F. Jones), Morialty 7.2 (11. Price), Sunbonni't 7.2 (L. Wilson), Sea King (i.lO (W. Avrc), and Aboriginal ti.7 (T. Carroll). 11. Cairns, who rode Aorangi to victory in theKawakuwa Hurdles at Kcilding will probably have the mount on the Merriwee gelding in the First Hurdles Handicap to-day. 'J'. I'iitcliard rides Te Kainui.
All Guns was responsible for a sterling gallop over seven furlongs on .Monday morning, the journey being accomplished in hniu Sl'viscc.' I'iiritutii will probably be seen under silk at Avondale to-day. An eighlypound hurdle race is not very high game for a horse who has been "kept' so long. They will be keeping him until he is only fit for a cart if they don't hurry up and do something! The consistent Tc Aroha appears amongst the acceptors for the Avondale Handicap. That she has not lost her da«h she proved by running second to Eaiiparaha in the'St. George's Handicap, one and a-quarter miles, at fillerslie last week.
Stylish, who won a sprint event at the Gisborne meeting, is considered a likely starter in the Chevalier Handicap at Avondale.
