TIIE SHOOTING SEASON. Per Press Association, Auckland, Last XiguD. A large number of sportsmen are leaving Auckland to-morrow for the country districts for the opening of the shooting season, which commences t>,i Friday. Ilangiririu, hake, Wluuigace, and part*, of the Waikato are the more favored localities, as it is stated that game of all descriptions is very plentiful in these districts. The forthcoming season promises to be a very successful one ,as all the principal Mooting areas are said to be well stocked, pheasants and cjuail in particular being in abundance - .

The crimes seems to have - been committed by one familiar with Mrs Best's movements, for it was while the lady was taking her customary walk that entrance was effected, ami the g,A*U abstracted. The matter waa promptly reported to the constable at Sumner, and diligent enquiries were made, but so far without result.

MAIMERS' UNION.
Elthaui, Last Night. Xne order paper for the Taranaki provincial Conference of the Farmers' Union contains, among other remits, the urging of the importation of labor, universal military training, increase in the contribution to the Navy, protesting against preference to unionists, and one urging that as the Union was not unanimous enougli to take up a strong political attitude, an effort be made to enlist the sympathy of farmers by lectures on up-to-date farm topics.
