FITZROY FIRE BRIGADE.
A GRACEFUL TRIBUTE TO THE LADIES.
As a mark of tneir appreciation of tlie splendid result achieved by tin- laIdies who carried out the- recent bazaar the members of iln- Fitzrov Volunteer lire Brigade entertained' their fair beuelaetresscs and ollh.t helpers at a social held in the Fitzrov liali on Thursday evening. The function was in. every way a thorough succrt,-. No cllorts were spared to ensure the en-
joyuient of their guc-.1t,. and though the brigade carried out the w'hole of the arrangement... the spirit in which they entered into the affair was such that the result left no shadow of doubt a* to their -inecrity of purpose in demonstrating their gratitude for favors nreived. -Mr W. t'lUlicUl, who presided, opened the proceedings in a homelv [ manner well calculate!! to pave the way for a thoroughly enjoyable evening, li,, extending a hearty welcome to the guests, the chairman wanulv eulogised the ladies for their many acts of kindness to the Brigade and hoped thev woxild take the entertainment tendered to them that evening in the spirit in which it was meant—a genuine tribute to their constant efforts to assist those whose mission it vva* to protect their homes from fire.
The programme was divided into three sections—music, cards, and dancing. Jli-s E. Linn ojiened the first section with a brilliant pianoforte fantasia, on Scotch airs. Songs were contributed l*v- Mrs. K. C. Griffiths. Miss I. Foote, Mr. ti. Murtagh, Fireman Aroa, and other.-, all liie items evoking hearty applause. Unfortunately several of 1 j those who were expected to contribut'" i failed to appear, but excellent substitutes filled up the gap, and the audi-
ence was evidently greatly pleased. After a short interlude, which was devoted to making presentation* to two ex-officers of the brigade, card tables were arranged and a vivacious, pleasant time ensued.
Before leaving the tables, the guest? were handed supper, winch both as U quality and variety was all that could i>e desired. Usually thi h [>art of a so <-ial entails a considerable amount ol trouble on the ladie-. |,nt for oncv they could take their ease and be waited on —a change that met with their entire approval and added to their enjoyment. Hearty' votes of thanks were accorded the ladies on behalf of the brigade, and a similar vote wu<s passed to the chairman.
On the tables and seats being removed, dancing commenced and continued till alwut midnight. The music, provided by Mr. West (violin) and Secretary •!. Lamb (piano) proved greatly to the liking of the dancens, who certainly made good use of their time. Altogether the social was one of the liesb that has Iteen held at F'itzroy, and reflected the greatest credit on the officers and members of the brigade. Among the guests were several mem-
hers of the Garrison Band, the brigade lieing greatly indebted to that band for their kindness in agisting towards the success of the luzaar. Considering that the members of the brigade defrayed all the expenses of the social out of their own pockets, they are deserving of high praise for the very practical and pleawant steps taken to show their appreciation of the aid given to the brigade.
