The City Council to-night accepted the resignation of Mr. Hugo, Superintendent of the Fire Brigade, who has been appointed by the Government to the position of inspector of Fire Boards for the Dominion. Mr. llugo was grained three months' leave ou full pay. He will take up his new duties ou June IStli.

At a conference of delegates of the l'Vdeiated -Moulders' Association, it was decided that each Union should appoint special trade secretaries to send reports to the general secretary for Circulation among members; aiso to ask each federated Union to give evidence to the executive 011 matters appertaining to the tariff as they affect the iron, trade, with a view to making an appeal for the imposition of increas" .ed duties on imijiorted iron and brass castings. The Government is to be asked to grant by statute preference to unionists in the employment of moulders in. the Government workshops.
EARTHQUAKE. Wellington, Thursday. A slight shock of earthquake was felt here at 11.48 this morning. A STRAY BULLET. Palmerston N"., Last Night. While 'having afternoon tea at the Grand Hotel this afternoon, three ladies were startled by a revolver bullet crashing through the window at which they were sitting, and after making an .impression on the dome leading from the lounge, it dropped, spent, close to where they were seated. Had the bullet, penetrated the pane about 18 inches lower it must have struck one of the ladies, The matter has been placed
