MAKING BOTH ENDS MEET ON TEN THOUSAND A YEAR.
A Uroyuou cntic having declared that ; f lie had sen the Bishop uf London wearing a massive overcoat that could not have cose less than £so—hall' a year's ■ salary of a. curate—a correspondent has I received the lollowing from the Bishops I private secretary:—"! may say tliat his l ur euat was given to him by a very old | friend, and that it did not cost anything • like XDO-ia fact, not a quarter of thai! j sum." ' I It will he remembered that a few years ago Dr. Ingram published a bal-ance-sheet showing how dillicult it is lor a Bishup to live on his Income—which is in his case ten thousand a year. Tho accounts showed that the Bishop's own' personal expenditure did not amount to much more than three hundred pounds. The rest was all spent in the up-keeping of his palace, and in various necessary ecclesiastical hospitalities and charities. For -some years now there has beer' agitation aniongt the Bishops for economy. Tim Vicar of Leeds some time ago declared that there ought to be no more palaces—a more modest house would meet the case, and would make I much of the present expenditure needless; while Sir Francis Powell, M.P., warned the Bishops against entertaining too lavishly. "It is not desirable that thvir hospitality should be a champagne hospitality," he said, "but that modest hospitality which j s the best lonn." The BMiop of Kipoii once declared that no layman in the hind would attempt to occupy the palace of the Bishop of London on the liishop's income. The Bishop of Worcester has always refused to reside in the large and historic castle at Ilartlebury, which is his ollicial palace. For a time he resided in Die house of a Worcester rector, who, to accommodate the Bishop, contented himself with quarters in the glorilied poreir of a local gentleman's house! Latterlv the Bishop has lived in a most modest' dwelling in the city, the rent of which is only £l2O a year.
