CHESS CONGRESS.
Per Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. To-day the competitors in the New Zealand' Chess Congress did not put i" long hours, for the dclinite withdrawal of C. Sainsbury, a tiisborue entrant, has reduced the number of games, making it an easy matter to complete the tournament next Monday. Results were as follows:—Third round—Connell v. Freeman. An awkward oversight, tile running down of the cheek dock, put Connell at a' disadvantage, for he mistook the time, losing 38 minutes, and in continuing his game fi'°ui the previous day made some rapid moves whiwi landed him in a hazardous position, from which he never emerged. When tune was up he still had six moves, and the game was forfeited to Freeman on time. Kumnier v. Davies.—This game had opened slightly in black favour, and developed into a slashing attack on black's position, when it eventually resulted in white getting into dilliculties. Davies gained a pawn on the 17th, and continued pressing, cheeking his opponent on the 20th move, lie did so again on the 27th, when white resigned. James v. Barnes.—This open and very interesting game ended in a victory for Barnes, making the second defeat for the veteran congress player. Rutherford v. Kelling.—The. game was resumed, with blircl; having the attack, and Kelling eventually won.
Fourth round—Rutherford beat James; Mason beat Connell; Stewart beat Fox.
