ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
TKAIN DERAILED. Per Press Association. Oamaru, Last Xigfit. As the late express train was crossing over Thames Street this evening, drawn bv two engines, the bogie wheels of the leading engine left the metals anil ploughed over the street and 011 lo the sleepers 011 the other side. The train was pulled up, and the engine detached and run into a siding. The train was delayed 50 minutes. The street crossing is a' dangerous place at any time, and it is fortunate the accident was 110 worse. The train had just started from I lie station and was going slow, it is ■said that road metal had become jammed in the rails and lifted the bogie w'hoebv off. The engins sustained little damage, hut the passengers received a fright.
A YOUTH'S SUICIDE. Masterton, Tuesday. Yesienlav Edward T. Meredith, aged 1!). the son of the lale Richard Ileredith. speni the evening at the residence of Mrs. Edwin Meredith, Upper Plain, with Dr. ami Mrs. Dawson and Mi-s Meredith. lie was apparently in perfectlv health and high spirits. After supper, he proposed to have a bath, and weni into the bathroom, from which shortly after the sound or a firearm was heard. Dr. Dawson found the vontn dead. No cause is assigned for the rash act. The Dawsons and Miss Meredith, the ladies being aunts of deceased, were to have sailed for England to-day.
•IMPALED ON A TRAP-SHAFT-Auckland, Last Night
At llelensville, Jonas Matthew White, aged IK. his brother I'. White, of tlio ITelonaville Post, and Mr. N. Kav, of Mount Iloskttl, were cantering on hov.seback when a trap occupied by Messrs. McAdam and Hart came in the opposite direction. Tim shaft of the vehicle penetrated the side of the first-named lad. and as he was badlv injured he was immediately taken back to Helensville. White died early this morning. An inquest was 'held to-day, and a verdict of accidental death was brought in. Oamaru, Tuesday. Mr. W. Edmondson, manager since l!H)() of the local branch of the I'nion Bank, died to-day. Deceased's condition had been precarious for some time past. Auckland, Tuesday.
Mr. 'lhmuas M. -Jackson, auctioneer, -on -of Mr. Samuel .lackson, solicitor, better known a* Mandeiio Jackson, died suddenly at Hawaii Nland from an apoplectic x'izure.
