At the Y.li.C. autumn luceting, Grenadier. by Soult.—Hotcherina, was sent out a warm favorite for the Hill Handi'ap. aud the dashing 3laori!ander won, pulling up by three lengths from a good held. On the same day Delaware ran third in the April Handicap won by Currandooley.
Australian handicapped arc taking no risks with Mimjeet. She is weighted at !)*t l.llbs in the (Goodwood Handicap, and has list TU> to earn- in the Adelaide Cup. The latter race, which is run over a mile and live furlongs, is probably beyond the ex-New Zealander's >tuying caparity, ❖ * $ The Jiawson Stakes, a nine-furlong weight-tor-age race, gave the famous Poseidon a chance to prove that he had retained his brilliancy of last season. Poseidon was a warm favorite, and cantered in thre e lengths ahead of Decoli lette. The Hying son of Positanu has ■ been scratched lor the Sydney Cup, and ! wi| i be reserved for the w«ijjkt-for-a«e i events at Randwick. With Mountain , King and Poseidon starting, the New Zealander Elevation will liave a warm I task to beat Australia's best. * * * -Sydney sporting writers have a good word to say for Elevation. Thus 1 "Pilot";— The New Zealand crack Elevation bounded along in taking style yesterday, running nine furlongs in very fast time with a big lad up. The first impression Elevation conveys is that of a natty pony of high quaiity. I believe his trainer claims that his height is lo.l'/g. If so, he must be very high on the withers, as he docs not look any taller than Boniform, who was about 15 hands, and is nothing near as thick-set. Ponyish, or not, he is a great galloper, and though 1 eaunot believe him quite equal to winning a Doneaater with 0.1, he is Mire to give a good account of himself in some race before the close of the meeting. On Saturday he and Bright Steel were, put together over six turlongs, and lor the first live they went very fast. Then both cased oil", and just at the time they did so it appeared to me that the New Zealander was doing the better of tile two. But then it is claimed that Bright Steel is a ba 1 worker, though it cannot be said that Mini' hi> arrival at Kaudwiek he has shaped like one.
One of the best iinishes ever witnessed on the AJe.xandra Park tracK took piace at the finish of the Uigh-clas- Trotting Handicap. Four horses came into the straight abreast and a thrilling contest ensued in which the scratch horse, Specialist, gradually wore down Maplcwoo<|, und won all out by a head. The time recorded. 2min 21 4-osec, was only one-iilth ol a second behind the mile record for the Auckland track, which was put up by Specialist last season. The exhibition of trotting at the meeting was of a very high order, and finishes rcmarkablv close.
the tour-year-old Octoroon, by Mensehikofl- The Slave, scored a long overdue win in the Park Handicap at the Auckland Trotting Club's meet-ill* on Saturday last. Another fashionablybred one in Imprituus (Phoebus Apolio —St. Amyj won the Barn Handicap, Ifughie running second iu both pony
In referring to the fact that the Ascot gold cup, of 18M, which was won by touchstone, is to be given as a prize next summer at a. race meeting in Germain, an English exchange mentions that Karon Oppenheim. president of the Cologne Race Society, discovered the cup la si summer in London in the shop of a dealer in antiquities and objets d'art. Baron Oppenheim bought the cup forthwith, and decided to offer it a> a prize at, one of the Cologne race meetings. This is remarkable enough, bul it would be still more interesting; to learn how Touchstone's Cup ever came , lo leave Eaton Hall. |
