THE AMERICAN FLEET. | Per Press Association. Auckland, Tuesday. In an interview, the Hon. J. AlcGowan stated that Cabinet, at its lirst meeting, would consider the entertainment of the American fleet. Personally he favored the adjournment of Parliament- to enable legislators to participate in the welcome, but it would depend how the matter was viewed by members. No scheme had yet been formulated to entertain the visitors. He did not approve of the, suggestion to hold a native gathering in Auckland. There were many dilliculties in the road, and, besides, th L . Americans saw plenty of nai tives in their own country. He favored a big round of bright social funetons.
NEW ZEALAND'S RECEPTION. Auckland, Lust Night. The following telegram lias been received liy the Mayor (Mr. A. M. Myers| from this I'rinie Minister at Roxburgh, in reply to one sent by His Worship regarding the action of the Government In connection with the visit of the American fleet; —"In reply to your telegram, the Government programme for entertaining the lleet will be considered when Ministers meet in Wcllngton next week, and I will advise you of the decision when X a-ni in a position to do so. The hearty co-operation of the citizens of Auckland will be appreciated by the Government. Information as to the number of vessels to visit .New Zealand has lieen asked for, and 1 am informed that fourteen are coming, though this is not definite. 1 shall let you have any information 1 can later.—l. G. Ward."
