FEDERAL PARLIAMENT.

FEDERAL MINISTRY'S DEFEAT,' LABOUR'S DEMANDS. Melbourne, April 13. It is understood that the Labour caucus is willing to support Sir W. Lyne, as Premier, if the party is given a majority of the portfolios. Labour members want four portfolios and one appointment as honorary member of the Cabinet, leaving Sir W. Lyne three portfolios and one honorary membership.

There is a possibility that Mr. Deakin may consent to remain in office until the close of the session. This would suit Sir W. Lyne better. He would then be prepared to undertake the formation of a ministry.

MR. DEAKIN TO HOLD OFFICE A LITTLE LONUER, Received April 1.4, 0.45 a.m. Melbourne, April 13. Mr. Alfred Deakin has decided to retain the office of Premier till the tariff is finished or perhaps till the conclusion of the present session.
