It is covered by insurance in all the ollices. A big stall' of ollice employees, engineers, and carpenters worlied energetically to get the plant into working order, and repairs were cil'eeted sufficiently to enable work to be resumed as usual today. When the lire brigade was proceeding to the fire the hose reel with two men capsized in turning the corner of Fort Street. Tile drivers of bakers' delivery carts have struck for an increase of pay from 42s to 50s and overtime. iSapier, Last Night. Mr. Culver, Inspector ol' Factories and Awards, accompanied by Mr. Johns, his successor, had an interview this afternoon witli the bakers' carters who are on strike at Hastings. The men were advised to resume work, and if they had not received any back pay, to put in claims for it.
CUSTOMS DEPARTMENT CHANGES. Wellington, April 1-5. The following changes in the Customs Department have been decided upon: Mr. Hawley, collector lit Gisborne, to be collector at Tiniaru, vice Mr. Colebrook (retired) j Mr. Howie, collector at Greymouth, to be collector at Gisborne; Mr. F. J. Walker, "landing waiter at Wangaliui, to be collector at Grcyniouth; Mr. S. llarrop, landing waiter at "Wellington, j to be transferred to Wanganui.
TIMBER EXPORTS. Auckland, Last Night. Four hundred and forty thousand feet of timber were shipped by the Mokoia, which left for Sydney this evening. THE WINTER EXODUS. Auckland, Last Night. The s.s. Mokoia, sailing for Sydney, takes to Australia a very large number of passengers, a berth in the vessel's steerage class being absolutely unprocurable by 110011 to-day, while only a few saloon berths remain open for selection. The steerage passengers alone number 181.

Must of the men are gumdiggers, wlio have been in the Dominion from live to seven years. Some of the travellers are proceeding to Austria with the iit tent ion of remaining there, while others are only paying a visit to their Homeland, and will afterwards return to New Zealand. WOMEN DRINKING IN HOTELS. Duuedin, Last Night. Concerning (he question of drinking in hotels by women, the police report states that the bars in Dunedin and suburbs are visited by women to a very limited extent. Those who go into hotels to consume liquor on the premises go into the sitting-room and not into the bar, and a lew other women purchased small quantities of liquor for consumption in their homes. This report corresponds with the personal experience of the chairman niul several members ol the Licensing Committee who have made inquiries into tile matter.

At a meeting of the Otago branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants yesterday it was decided to ask that a special conference be called to deal with the questions of control and publication of the Review and the reorganisation of the society. Napier, Last Night. Two keepers of temperance hotels and a restaurant-keeper were lined at the Magistrate's Court to-day for employing assistants for more than the maximum number of hours in one week.
