THE SYDNEY STRIKE.
OVKU AT LAST. AOItICUMENT ARRIVED AT. COXCKSSIOXK TO THE MEN. Received April I'2, 5-47 p.m. .Sydney, December 11. The strike is practically settled. Iteceived April 12, 7.40 p.m. Sydney, April 11. The only point precluding a settlement on Friday night was in connection with the Merchant Service Guild. This was arranged to-day, when the agreements were signed and ratified by both parties. The coastal steamers resume run ning forthwith. The settlement provides that ocastal companies carry out their agreement with the men takou on during the strike. Those formerly employed to return as opportunity oilers. The Newcastle Company to have the right to retain liio present employees, provided coasta! rates are paid in lieu of a weekly wage. Preference to unionists to operate after tiie present employees have joined the union or left ihc companies' employ. The engineers agree that the coastal shipowners may mail at their own discretion not more than six steamers between the three ileets with engineers, not exceeding twelve. The remainder of the steamers to be manned solely by members of the institute of Marine Engineers, who also have preference in future vacancies. -None of the present engineers or employees to be retained alter the termination of the present agreements. The Merchant Service UufltJ stipulated that all steamers now out of commission shall bo manned by members of the Uuild, who also are to fill vacancies as they occur. The agreement fixes the number of permanent hands for the various wharves,
