One of the most promising voices in Mr. Pollard's juvenile operatic troupe at the present time is said to be that of Miss Clarice Bueknian, of Mew Plymouth, a sister of Miss llosina Buck, man. The Rev. J. Laird, Baptist minister, arrived in New Plymouth last night from Ireland. Mr. Albert F. Hes.s, uf Whangamomona, lias been appointed clerk to the Council for the new county of Whangamomona, which has been cut out of the county of Stratford. Mr. James Sexton, of Stratford, will be returning olliccr for the election of the lirst council, and Mr.

Charles Penn, of Stratford, will make up the electors' roll*.

Mr. .1. Vigor Brown, the Mayor of Napier, is to be asked to become a candidate for the Napier seat at the general election. Mr. Brown has consented to esek re-election as Mayor. ■Mr. J. H. Frethev, of Kaponga, has purchased Air. J. Hooker's tine suburban residential property at Frankleigh Park. Mr. and Mrs., Frethev are well known in South Taranaki as most successful horticulturists, and the Xew Plymouth Horticultural Society's affairs should receive a good fillip from the infusion of this new blood.

At a meeting of the Board of Directors I of the Bank of New Zealand at Wei- ! lington yesterday, Air. Harold Beauchamp was (a 'Press wire states) reelected chairman of the Board for the ensuing linaneial year. Mr. James Ashcroft, late coroner and otlicial assignee in bankruptcy, Wellington, was presented yesterday by members of the legal profession with a cheque for sixty guineas. The Hon. T. W. llislop presided, and he and Mr. 11. I). Bell, K.C.. spoke of the ability shown by Mr. Ashcroft in carrying out the duties of his position during a great many years. In reply. Mr. Ashcroft remarked thai lie had had twenty-four years of oHicial life, including nine in Dunedin. The bankruptcy business was falling oft', for whereas in 1884 the bank* ruptcv cases in New Zealand numbered 8-10, in 1904 they were only 180.
