Mis, Advance won in hollow I fashion.
■Sir f.eorge CliJioi'd'j four repre-enla-iives >tarU-d on six occasions, but Miy best they could register wns Husbandman's third in tlie Manawalu Slakes. The .Maori-owned Tuataki (The Possible— Maid Marion) was a quiet tip for the Juvenile Handicap, and, after running well back in the earlier stages of the contest, came with a groat burst of speed at the linish. and just beat Vasa for second money. Tuataki should pay liia way later on. Silver u?ad was very unlucky to lose the Hack Flying, and was going faster than anything at the finish. running second to Lethean. In the Farewell Welter ilr. C. E. Major's gelding made amends for liis defeat by winning a good race from the much-boomed Trnganini. The veteran sprinter liallarat seem/ to be made of the same stuff as Holdspur and Blazer. In the Borough Handicap she began quickly and lasted long enough to slave oft' the challenges ol Contender and King Billy. He is certainly one of the cast-iron breed. Claremont led (iold Dust 10 the last obstacle in the Papitoae Hurdles, and appeared to have a winning chance, but blundered badly, coming down on his nose, and iJold Dust quickly drew out, eventually winning by a couple ol lengths.
Tanginioana broke a long spell of illluck by appropriating the Dominion Cup, after a splendid tussle with Bourrasque, whom the erstwhile Taranaki trainer, T. Clarke, seems to have got into great form. Tanginioana won by a bare length, The Lark being half a head behind Bourrasque. It is pleasing to note the success of Mr. D. Wilson with the jumper Showman. The Workman gelding is a good jumper, and has a great dash of speed between obstacles, and should win a few more races when the jumping season comes along. Under the heading "Defiant Bookmakers,'' the New Zealand Times" comments on the arrogant manner of the bookmakers at the recent Manawalu meeting as follows:—"Aggressive and enterprising bookmakers went a little too far along these lines at the Mana* vatu Racing Club's meeting this week, and a lot of trouble was experienced in dealing with them. On the lirsi day of the meeting a 'large number of professional bettors wer° licensed, and they at jmec gave evidence of their desire to (fyunt, the racing club in its efforts at regulation. A space in the saddlingpaddock had been set apart in a good position for their operations, but they insisted up<m encroaching into Hie near vicinity of the totalizator, obviously with tlife idea of intercepting patron- of the "nuTLdiine.*' Their raucous bellowings caused great inconvenience to thoso operating the lotalisatol's. A linn request from- the president, secretary, and stewards to\ withdraw was met wilh an absolute refusal, but eventually the Hon, Mr. Millar, 'Minis!or of Labor, in his capacity ot Urbitrator-in-geneial, prevailed upon UK' m to go back. But Hi* move was few yards, aiitl after j this pretended the re quests of the oilicials they became as troublesome as before. In the evening, the stewards who had been so openly defied met to consider what should he done, and it was decided to refuse licenses or admission to the course to several of the bookmakers whoso demeanour had been most offensive. Many of those prominently identified with wing endeavored by desultory deputationising next day to secure the removal of tin' embargo, but the stewards woe firm, and they will report the matter to the Racing Conference with a strong recommendation that the offenders be disqualified from going upon any Zealand racecourse. The chicken- are coming home to roost. We hope our legislative incubators are proud of their brood!"' The usual budget of turf topic.- appears in to-day's supplement.
