In an interivew the Count said: "Let me say at once that t went to tho memorial Mass for my deceased relative this morning without any intention whatever of picking a quarrel with the Prinw de Sagan. To tell the truth, i was surprised to see him in the church, for he has for years been on bad terms with all the familv.
" When the Mass was at an end, Sagan passed me in the church, and, as h(> did so, brushed up against me and deliberately put on his tall hat in church, tapping the crown of it as a provocation to myself.
"J. followed him out of the church, for I saw the intended slight, and when we were quite out of the church t wen!., up to him and said,. 'Here are the Mew lear presents 1 owe you,' and spat fu'l in his face. Sagan raised his walkingstick to strike me, aud I parried the blow with my cane. As I did so the point of my cane touched his forehead, causing him to bleed profusely and knocking oil' his hat. lie started back, aud in doing so, fell into the gutter, from which he ought never to have got up." As to the cause of the quarrel, the Count said: " It is an entirely private matter, of which I dosire that nothing at all shall lw printed." Prince do Sagan, who was seen later, said: " 1 had no intention whatever oi provoking Castellane, but I liave been told that for several weeks past he has been seeking to pick a quarrel with me whenever he should meet, me in the street. Therefore, when 1 went up the aisle of the church, and saw Castellane in one of the rows, looking straight at me, 1 was taken aback, and, expecting some sudden onslaught, I. instinctively put on my hat. I had no intention whatever of giving oll'ence or being rude.
"Castellane's attack on niu outside the church was unprovoked and brutal. 11(i deliberately sought me out and spat at me.
