THE RETIRING MAYORESS.

We urr persuaded that no dissentient voice will be raised to Ihe proposal ventilated in our columns yesterday )>y Mr. K. Uellringer, that some steps should lie taken to fittingly recognise tin' work performed by the retiring Mayoress Mrs. Dockrill. important a-> K the highest civie otfice in a borough. |it certainiy little more so than that occupied by the ludpuiate of its holder, j and it goes without saying that in Mrs. . Dockrill New Plymouth has been privi--1 kged to possess a Mayoress iD every sen?f worthy of the cilice. Her position as the guiding spirit fu all nuttier* where the assistance »>f the ladies lias l>een required has • become almost an established one. and much as her tim<' on very many occasions must' have been encroached upon to her material discomfort and inconvenience., she lias ever cheerfully taken the helm. Where her qualities are so well known it would seem almost superfluous to enlarge upon them; but the one feature that might, but most not, be overlooked is that the retiring Mayoress has made the oflice of Mayoress an actual, and not a mere courtesy one. In saying this we are not unmindful of the very excellent qualities of her predecessors, but we think it may safely be said, without resorting to comparison, that no Mayor's lady has shown a fuller perception of the duties pertaining to the ollice than the nubjecl of this notice. We are entirely in sympathy with the desire that

something should lie done to mark the townspeople's appreciation of Mrs. Dockrill's services, and have no doubt thai a gathering thoroughly representative of all classes in the community will attend the meeting to be held in the Town Hall on Wednesday afternoon ne.\t to discuss Uie matter.
