CONSUMPTIVE SANATORIUMS.
Per Press Association. Auckland, Lust Night.
Dr. Mason, Chief Health Officer, who arrived from Wellington to-day, was waited upon by impress representative m reference lo the subject of consumptive saiialoriums touched upon by a deputation in the .South. Dr. Ala Sou remarked that the results of the Te Waikaho Sanatorium, which bad been mentioned by llie .Minister as a demonstration station, had proved eminently satisfactory, the percentage of cures having been approximately 21 per cent, which, consid ering the general lateness at which cases were received, would compare favorably with the Continental institutions. Tim Ola"o Hospital Hoard's suggestion that a sanatorium should be established in Central Utago by the Government, was entirely opposed to the usual policy by which "each ward looked after its own sick. The Cambridge institution was a national one, and received from all parti of the Dominion patients who, it was believed, would "benefit by that particular climate. "I am glad to note," said the Doctor, ''that lifter many days, Auckland is beginning to realise its responsibilities in this direction. Provision has been made in Taranaki, Nelson, Wellington, Whangarei, Thames, and Invercar . gill, and Christchnreh, and it now only remains for the two centres, Dunedin and Auckland, to fall into line. I am strongly of opinion that Auckland should make accommodation for at least ol patients within the district, and thus put an end to the present state of afairs. Of course, tliere is not. nearly sufficient accommodation in New Zealand for all consumptive patients, but that various districts, by doing their share, are gradually increasing to meet the requirements.
