The stormy weather last week did a good deal of damage in South Wostlaml, traffic being interrupted for ten days. Mr. T. Y. Seddon, M.P., who is on tftir of the district delivering pre-sessional addresses, was delayed ten days in the Haast district, owing to Hoods and road i damage. The storm was a prolonged ■ one. and in twelve days twenty inches of i rain fell at Okuru." Lightning and thunder were almost incessant. The telephone line was badly damaged, and is still interrupted. In the far south floods destroyed roads, and all ford crossings were badly scoured out.
THE POULTRY INDUSTRY. Auckland, Last Nip-lit. ' Over 900 birds were received at the Government poultry depot last week, the great majority for local consump lion, but while the number of birds coming forward is not decreasing appreciably, eggs are showing a tendency 1" fall iiway. Tt is thought tint the present cold snap will still further tend to a decrease in this respect. NEW ZEALAND HEMP. Auckland, Last Night. The totiil quantity of New Zealand hemp graded at Auckland by the Governinent grader during the vnar ended March 31 lust, was 43,002 hales, or 712(i tons, valued at .-£95,000. For the same period 121)0 tons of tow, worth about £OOOO, passed through the grading works, making the total value of the hemp dressed at Auckland for the year €IOI,OOO. The figures show a decrease on the previous year of 027 bales, or 800 5 tons. The Government grader indicates ! that from April 1 a remission of Id per ewt. is to be made in hemp-grading fees. THE DAIRY REGULATIONS. Dunedin, Last Night. The Hon. R. McNab arrived here by the second express to-night. In replying to a deputation of dairymen, the Minister gave a distinct promise that the substantial improvements in regard to dairies and byres would not be enacted until there was sufficient statutory authority for compelling the landlord to bear his portion of the cost. It was not intended to ask that byres be completely concreted, but there was a necessity for having some form of paving which would be impervious to water. Power would be given for appeal from a decision of an inspector to the Chief Inspector of Stock. If the regulations did not work satisfactorily he would be prepared, at the end of twelve months, /to reconsider the whole position. Hs [ wished to make it quite clear that tlu desire of the Department was to make . the regulations educative rather than punitive. The Minister leaves tomorrow for Cromwell, where he will join the Prime Minister. ' THE '•RAILWAY REVIEW." Masterton, Last Night. '■ At a meeting of the Masterton branch ' of the Amalgamated Society of Railway fc Servants the following resolutions were - carried:—That, in connection with the "Railway Review," this meeting of the ' Masterton branch of the Amalgamated - Society of Railway Servants expresses s its entire confidence in the executive - council as at present constituted, and t considers that Mr. Hornsby was fairly 3 treated by being able to tender for our . paper, and it would have been an injustice to other publishers had the conference allowed Mr. Hornsby to take r over the same without tendering for it. TRAMWAY MEN'S WAGES. j Wellington, Tuesday. A conference between members of the City Council and representatives of the Tramways Union on the question of an increase in wages is being held in I camera. The city electrical engineer , reports that the annual wages of the | local tramway employees are*- nearly .0150 more than would be paid if the ] Auckland award were in force, ano ,C,'J322 more than would be paid under . the rates of the Dunedin award. The local union is asking for increases; which would amount to £7500. A EEILDINU CLAIM. Peilding, Tuesday. At a meeting of the loeal Chamber of Commerce last night it was decided to send a deputation to wait on the Hon.; Hall-Jones on Tuesday next to put before him the claims of Feilding to bo made a stopping place for the through express from Wellington to Auckland. The deputation will consist of Mr. Atkinson (president of the Chamber), supported by representatives of County Councils, Farmers' Union, the Show Association, and the Auctioneers' Association, MILKING EXHIBITION. „„ „ . .
