Th t . engine-driver reported that there had been, enislied during the month -JUIJ yards, of which In yard* were lor the. Tataraimaka lload' Hoard, started crushing at kalikai.i on the llit.ii inst., and shifted to Tiiiiaru depot mi ltith. Owing to wet weather ami delay in petting the elevator belt and buckets, lie had not done union crushing there. A new set of concaves should lie put in before going to the Moa riding. This he could do at the Waiwakuilio depot, but he would need a small furnace, as the forge was hardly •atisfactury. A newhopper would soon be required.—Recommendations will be given effect to. F-jicluau M. J. Jones, Tariki, re|wrted having completed the pipe culvert at the Norfolk road. He had also shortened the Waitepuke bridge by 20 feet, and had filled in and metalled the approaches. The repairs to the Mangawhete bridge cost L2 18s. Upon the suggestion oi the chairman, the Council decided to take steps to reinstate the Durham road (Moa Koad District), which was being damaged by the Council's metal carting contractors. The matter was left with the -Moa riding member*, with power to act. Foreman E. Bennett (Junction road east, Moa riding) asked for a further 20 yards of metal to complete the road to th e Dudley road corner. Two pipe culeerts were required on the zig-zag. He had completed most of the blinding and banking up on Turner's contract. He baa had some patching done on the Durham road. Foreman Walker (Junction road) re-. ported having inspected the eouniy reserves in the locality, a> instructed. Messrs Harris' and lieilby's farms were the only unsatisfactory ones, but in i both cases the work was now being done. He had no metal on band for the Mountain road maintenance. Foreman Holme* (Wailara riding) re ported that Clare had completed the understruttiug of tlie .Manga maw hete bridge. Ihe Mangaoraka and W'aiongona bridges had aNo been repaired. .Mr. Jelriry's liicbiuoud mad metalling ' contract was completed, a- well a, Mr. (artwright's on the .Mountain road. Foreman Iluse (Umata ridingl reposed that be had been using the new plough, and it was doing splendid work. He required aliout lifty jards of metal Ifor repairs on the South road between Oaknra township ami tli P factory. He suggested trying crushed shingle on the road, this costing 3s Id per yard le-s than crushed metal. Cr. Andrews and Adlam said that the new metal placed on the road had largely disappeared, having been ground to powder on the old road, which should ! have lieen ploughed up first. It was decided to make an experiment with the shingle as -uggestcd. Air. Morris wrote asking why the foreman had beeu stopped by Councillor Adlam from sloping a bank at the Tapuae. Cr. Adlam -aid he had wanted to know whether or lint the Council was nquired to do this work. The award was produced, and it was found that the Council must slope the
hank, anil the matter was left to Cars. IU-orgi- ami Adlani to arrange. Cr. Tali-: Well get to the end of the Tapuae -om e dav. It was decided to a-k .Mr. .Newton King to -el! by auction the |»iriri limber at tlnj Tapuae during this month.

Had the work of constiin ii.'ii -larteil.tlie cru-lier would liave been b|.'i-!c.i from coming north. Compensating extension of time would lie given. He had liad a number of interviews re Avenue road deviation with the chairman. .Mr. .Murray, Mr. Itoy, Mr. Cliff, ami others. Mr.' Cliff wa- now sati-fied with the proposed deviation, with a slight alteration, which will not affect the plans. There -eemed no reason why this long-delayed work should not be proceeded with on the lines adopted by the engineer, for which plan- and specifications were ready. The Stony river reclamation works were proceeding satisfactorily under Mr. Grayling. The work was a heavy and inijKirtaut one that could not lie- estimated accurately as to cost. There was no doubt that unless the i river-bed were lowered below the bridge. not only would the bridge lie carried away, but the low-lying jiortion of the Main road to the west would also be destroyed, uii-essitatiug a very heavy expenditure in new bridge and formation, be-ides compensation. The Council would have to decide whether it would go on uiih the pre-ent work or lake tlie ri-k of thi- very heavy expenditure. He estimated that t:i7s would make a fair -tart and probably d" all tii.it wa- neee-s.uy. but there wa- a great uncertainty in thi- cla— of work. A' thwxl might do good or it might do harm. He -minted ont that the Stf.nv river w.t- the only one in the .-olllliy of thi- el.l--. whereas in nlhet i ! part- uf the Dominion they were the '• rule, not tl xeoption.
