INDUSTRIAL DISPUTES BILL
THE XEW SOUTH WALES MEASURE ALTLTiATTONS IX THE PROVISIONS. Keceivod April 7, 0.23 a.m. , , . Sydney, April 6. the Industrial Disputes Bill, rceoniinnteil at the instance of Mr. 'Wade was before Parliament to-day. The prcle.enee provisions have been remodelled ns toiiows:—ln any claim as between members of trades unions and other persons oilermg labor at the same time, such members should be employed in .preference to such other persons, or that members of one trades union be employed in preference to another. Mr. \ade said he had carefully considered the Bill since it passed the committee, the Government was not going to have the right of having grievances redressed or confirmed by one sectiou-of the community. He said that when individuals other than unionists had substantial grievances they should have the right ol approaching the Court. The Government recognised the good work that had been done by unions, and that they were a convenient medium for approaching employers and dealing with industrial matters.
During the third reading debate Mr. McGowan declared that much of that which he had intended to say against the Bill was rendered unnecessary by Mr. Wade's amendment. He never dreamed that the Government would go so far as actually to encourage the organisation of industries. The Premier's concessions showed ;hat the Government tolerated unionism where formerly they encouraged it. He was opposed to the penal prohibitions in the Bill. He outlined other objections, but if these were amended they would make a workable measure.
The Bill was read a third time by 40 to 20 and forwarded to the Council.
