Creymouth, Last Night. -News was received in town to-night of a distressing drowning fatality at Ahaura, whereby Mr. and Mrs. James Doolan, of Slatey creek were drowned. Deceased attended a funeral at Nelson Creek, and left Ahaura at o o'clock to cross the Ahaura river. Jiolh were on one horse in fording the river, and must have been swept oil, A boat half a mile lower down wai conveying passengers across v. hen the body ot a woman wns noticed floating down, ft was secured and brought to the shore, but life was extinct. The body of the husband was recovered higher up the stream. Deceased leave eight young children, the ddest being thirteen years of age. Doolan was a settler at Slatey Creek, Moonlight. KILLED Jiv A ROl'tlll. T'aurauga, Last Night. An accident occurred on the Kaimoi estate on Saturday by which a, man named Jules Percy Murray lost his life. Deceased was working with Mr. A. B. Stiibbmg's survey party, m charge of Air. It. Page, and was engaged in clearing the branches oil' a tree on the linos vviit.ii a branch which he was cutting split and struck him a violent blow on the foiehoad, knucKiug him into a creek about 12ft below. Mr. Page, who witnessed t,ho accident rescued Murray from the water. Seeing that he was seriously injured, ha sent word into town. The injured niau was carried out on an improvised stretcher, being met later by the doctor. An examination by the'latter revealed the fact that the patient, was siill'ering from laceration of the brain, and on being brought into town deceased lingered until 1 o'clock on Sunday morning, when he died without having regained consciousness. An inquest iKii held this morning, a verdict of "accidental death'' being returned. Deceased leaves a widow and seven children, the ekiest of whom is liftccn years of age.
