At a meeting of the Tanners' and i'ellinonger.-!' Union the recent award made by the Arbitration Court was characterised as most biassed and prejudiced. ] Suggestions were made that the union should strike and lake steps to cancel ihe registration. Ultimately a resolution was pissi'd that the union had absolutely no faith in administration of the Act or conlidence in the president of the Court, and urged the .Minister of Labor to dispense with his Services.

Dr. t pindlay (Attorney-General) conleimeu I that the borough wa.s not prohibited i under the Municipal Corporations Act ] from contracting with the defendant company for the supply of gas to the in- i habitants. Section 220 of the Act gave : it full power, and Hint section was not controlled by section 222. Failing that, there was implied authority in the borough by virtue u[ its ownership of the streets to authorise any person to do anything to the streets which did not actually amount to a nui-auee. Sections 2-10 anil 4-12 recognised this authority. Dr. pindlay fori her contended that the company had committed no nuisance, and in a small borough with no wide streets like Peilding, the company could carry on operations without committing a nuisance. Wellington, Last Night. Argument in the Appeal Court in the ease of the Peiding borough versus the Peilding Gas Co. was concluded to-day. A PRISON APPOINTMENT. Wellington, Monday. Principal Warder J. C. Scaidon, of Mount. Kden Gaol, Auckland, wlio was formerly in charge of the prison camp at Waiotapu, has been appointed gaoler ;it Wangauui, vice K. T. At the Woodville meeting the railway men passed similar resolution*, also pledging themselves to stand by the six members of (lie conference who were in the minority. PlliE AT MATAURA. Gore, Monday. A disastrous tire, occurred at Matnura at 2 o'clock this morning. It originated in the hardware premises of J. T. J. Gall, in the centre of the town, and spread to the shops of Alex Gait (butcher), Welhiim Bros, (bakers), and Watson (tinsmith) on one side, and on the otlnflf to the small buildings occupied by McKay (dentist) and T)r. Hay, where it wa.s stopped by a brick wall. The premises ami nearly all the contents were destroyed. The stocks of Domigan (chemist), Greenwood (stationer), Hardy (tobacconist), Adams (cycle dealer), Smith and Jefl'ery (watchmakers), and the Southland Drapery Company were moved to a place of safety, but t'he spread of the fire in this direction was stopped through the exertions of the bucket brigade. The insurance available up to the present are:—.l. T. T. Gait, ,U2OO on premises and £IOO on the stock in the North British; .Alex. , Gait, plant £IOO in the Victoria: Weiham tiros., stock and plant, £IOO in the South British -and dCIOO in the Victoria.

The revenue account for the year ending March 31st, 1008, presented at the meeting of the Ohristchureh Tramway Board this afternoon, showed the gross earnings from operations to be £!)! .183 15s (id; operating expenses £58,088 I7s Od; leaviug the net earnings from operations £33,094 18s. From this was deducted interest £17,752 4s Od, and sinking fund £2051 Us Bd, leaving the net income £13,201 3 S 7d.
